Color is another important aspect of design that must be considered while designing websites. In order to anticipate any problems that may arise, it is essential to follow the below color guiding principles:
  • Appropriate contrast must be used in order to differentiate between background colors and foreground elements.
  • An adequate color distinction must be seen between text and background to ensure legibility.
    Example:
Combinations like red text on blue background make the text unreadable. While black text against a white background improves the readability of information.
  • There should be an adequate color contrast between the links and buttons in relation to the text, to ensure their distinctive functionality and hierarchy.
  • The choice of colors should look good on a variety of platforms, monitors and devices. This can be guaranteed by picking them from the 216-color web-safe palette.
  • The design must take into consideration visually impaired users while choosing the colors. They must not rely on color alone to convey information. This particularly affects blind users (who may not be able to get a color definition from their screen reading software) as well as colorblind users.

You may find it useful to test web pages with VisCheck to simulate how they look to colorblind users.
  • A colored background may be used to clarify a grouping of related information, as long as it doesn’t defy accessibility standards. See section Accessibility
  • The choice of a dominant color or theme that explicitly reflects any Lebanese political party should be avoided.
